While on our little walkabout in the downtown core we took one guidebook`s recommendation and checked out the pasajes that connect certain streets right between (or sometimes through) the forest of buildings. These serve as pedestrian-only passageways for quick maneuvering around the downtown core. There are a few left from the old days and they are beautiful and well kept. There are also a couple that have been converted into other things, like small markets or restaurants. The one in the following pictures is one of the older, more classic passages, called Pasaje Roverano and seems to have escaped modernization or appropriation. It still has the marble flooring and the original wrought iron railings. We had a late lunch in a nice restaurant at one end of the passage. Pasaje Roverano also has access to the A-line subway station Peru. The A-line is the oldest subway line in Latin America and still has some of its old wooden-interior trains. I haven`t taken any pictures of the trains yet but here are some of Pasaje Roverano:
