Protest, Anyone?
I`ve said it before but i`ll say it again: Argentines will take to the streets easily and often. Yesterday Ulala and i tried to walk around Plaza de Mayo and area to explore and take some pictures but we had to settle for just the surrounding area since there was a massive protest going on in the main square. I`m not sure exactly what the rally was for or against but i think it had to do with workers rights, maybe healthcare. Some of the flyers said things like "Equal remuneration, equal work" and "Increase for All" (in Spanish of course so i may be way off!). At first we thought it was yet another protest against Botnia. THOSE protests are about a pretty big issue going on here. In Uruguay there is a European company called Botnia which has decided to open a paper mill/processing plant on the river that divides the two countries, poisoning the water heavily (lax environmental standards and low wages are what attracted the company to South America in the first place). People on both sides of the river are pretty pissed off but especially on the Argentine side since they had no say in the affair but suffer just as much of the pollution, illness and (secondary) drop in tourism. The protests have been regular and building steadily larger. When Ulala and i lived in San Telmo we saw a few of these small marches go past our apartment. They`ve even closed the border between the two otherwise very friendly countries to avoid having thousands of protesters from Argentina flood into Uruguay. I don`t know enough of the issue to speak much more about it unfortunately. We also saw a couple weeks ago some protest by the taxi and truck drivers union that blocked traffic down 9 de Julio (the "World`s Widest Avenue"). They just parked their taxis across all 12 lanes of traffic!!" That one ended badly. Apparently there was a scuffle between police and some of the protesters and there were injuries and arrests. But ANYway, as for the peaceful rally we saw yesterday (the maybe-workers-rights rally), here are some pictures:

You happend to be mistaken about the reasons why Botnia settlet in uruguay/south america. Its because raw material, in this case wood is a lot cheaper and better available than in europe. Enviroment standards in this new plan are actually better than botnia's plants in europe.
